To the installation techs of ADT you bring up good points in your discussion, the main reason for Voip not working is updating Switches that the traffic has to flow through will take time. There are several systems provided by cable companies that are compatible. Please do coral ate Vonage Voip Service to your local cable Voip services. The cable companies partner up with actual phone companies that use real dial tone and not just bandwidth. the back haul process goes to a class 5 or 4 switch same as traditional land lines. Thanks for reading..........Engineer

Thanks for the valuable input... I recently bought a MacBook that has a OSX, about 2 months ago actually... can I use the OSX disks that came with it to install onto my dell mini?

For the record, I did not use the disks at all because I simply copied my old mac onto my new mac and then upgraded from there.

thanks for the info,
Margaret

ADT equipment stinks and their customer service stinks more.

After 1 month install, 1 window + 1 door sensor failed. They fixed that free of charge (still within warranty). While testing, the repair technician found that the original installers missed 2 windows (I paid for these) + the horn was not hooked up. Ok, Good..at least it's working now I thought- Wrong! After 3 months, another window sensor
failed. I called and was told it would cost $25 for a tech to come out. Ok fine. I paid and they came out and repaired it. The next month, another one fails... I call ADT again and the same story... $25 charge. I pleaded to cust service...their supervisor... All they said was it's $25 charge. Finally I gave up and paid. The next month, another sensor failed, this time, I just clipped it... 2 months later another sensor failed... After 3 years, out of 15 windows, 8 are still working, all the rest stopped working and clipped. Out of 4 doors, 2
are left.

The day my contract ran out, I called and canceled. When asked why I was canceling, I said that ADT hardware was failing and causing more headaches than good. The ADT rep said, "Oh OK".

I have a long story of them trying, and that is an understatement, to install the camera system. They took over one month to get it installed and 2 months to get it working most of the way.

I am in contact with their headquarters now but they are just as incompetent.

Can I post my story here so other people know to stay away?

Thank you,
Dominic

PS. They over charged me $1,400 and I may never see the refund, its been 28 days already!

I switched to ADT because AT&T wanted an exorbitant amount to add three new alarm points to my existing the system. AT&T told me my existing system would not support new devices. ADT offered a free system with minimal cost to install the additional alarms I needed with a three year contract. I believe that was fare price. I monitor (6) windows and doors to motion sensors and one fire alarm device. Since I no longer have AT&T as my phone provided and use a cable company if my power goes out there is no dial tome. The only way to is to install the cell phone system ADT sells for 285.00 installed. I have no problem with the ADT monitoring service they are very responsive and customer friendly. I create several false alarms a month because I forget to turn off the alarm when I enter my garage and by the time I get out of the car the alarm has been activated for over a minute. I always get a call from ADT verifying my safety.

I have been in the alarm tech. for 25 years and i read every comment on this page and i am now dumber for it. I always new the customers were clueless, and i suspected most techs. were hacks, but i didn't realize how full of b.s they are. There is know reason anyone who can read can't find the information they need on the internet, have you ever heard of google. Who in there right mind signs a contract and doesn,t read it, but lets some sales slob spell it out for them. Thats dumb. Why would you switch phone providers if you weren,t sure the systems that you currenty have that use a phone line (pots). will still function. Thats dumb. I'm not defending alarm companies, but there no different than anybody else trying to sell you crap, if your a sucker they can tell. At least i can, some of my customers I could sell all kinds of junk to, if i actually cared what they needed. I just fix the junk some hack salesman sold ,some dumb customer bought and can't remember how it works, then some hack and dasher lick and sticks and jets. Thats what it has become.

They system won't work with Vonage. Control panel needs to see typical phone voltage, 48-52 volts. That voltage allows the system to monitor the phone line and establish dial tone.
If you want to keep Vonage (and I wouldn't recommend those sorry bastards to anyone) you can add a cellular unit for the primary line.
It's not cellular like your cell phone, it's basically a digital radio that will transmit the signals to the central station.

First, the system needs 48 volts to dial out, if you don't have that the system won't send anything. Vonage cannot proved the needed voltage for the alarm system by itself. You MIGHT be able to get it working, but you'd create a fire hazard in the process, and when it did catch on fire...you wouldn't have a working phone line to send out the signal. Second, I've seen several telco tech unable to wire the alarm system into the phone line so it can take control of the line and send the signal out, since vonage service is installed by the user and not a tech, I'm pretty sure that even if you got past the voltage issue, you'd have the system dialing out into limbo instead of to the CMC. Besides the alarm system is worthless anyway, if you need protection get a dog or a gun. Why be a coward and blame faceless companies for your inability to protect yourself and loved ones?

yeah, call the IBEW if you want to pay union rates for a residential system, installed by someone who most likely is a true electrician (I know the difference, I'm a Master Electrician and when I got into the Alarm Industry, being an electrician didn't make one lick of difference)

Seriously, a national company gives you all of the headaches of a normal national company, regardless of the industry. Cell phones, computers, security systems, blah blah they're all the same.

Here's the crime of ADT, they charge you $30 a month for standard service. It costs them no more than $3 to monitor your system....nice mark up there.

There are now adaptors that can be used for your security system, www.essource.com makes a nice relatively cheap product. It can be a little wonky at times but it does the trick.

Alarm signals do not work over VoIP because of byte packeting and delivery issues and the lack of regulation from a VoIP provider as opposed to a POTS providor who uses Fiber Optics and an internal network. Nine times out of ten you may not have a problem...but what if that 10th time is a CO detector, a fire, or a burglar? Don't listen to flunkies who want to provide you with a "free" way out, and don't trust anyone on a silly message board over the internet. Call a decent sized security contractor in your area and ask them to provide you with information...then contact another. Always talk to the manager or owner, as sales people are there to sell you something, managers are there to avoid problems in the future. Lather, rinse, repeat.

When you are finished, ask them for a list of references. Decent security companies have customers who they ask to represent them, and who are willing to take calls on their service.

When all is said and done, be sure you read the contracts, but remember, a contract lawyer can break ANY contract if given enough time!

yeah, call the IBEW if you want to pay union rates for a residential system, installed by someone who most likely is a true electrician (I know the difference, I’m a Master Electrician and when I got into the Alarm Industry, being an electrician didn’t make one lick of difference)

Seriously, a national company gives you all of the headaches of a normal national company, regardless of the industry. Cell phones, computers, security systems, blah blah they’re all the same.

Here’s the crime of ADT, they charge you $30 a month for standard service. It costs them no more than $3 to monitor your system….nice mark up there.

A Small Alarm Company can be a good company. However, it also can be just a guy and a "monitoring center" in his garage. A Large Alarm company can be a good good company. However, it also can be a company who's size had made simple customer service impossible due to corporate bureaucratic insanity. Research before you buy from anyone. You best source of information is usually your friends, family and neighbors.

As for this: "a “real” security system isn’t free or costs $99.00" this is not really accurate. The is little difference between the systems sold for $99.00, $49.00 or free. They are usually either DSC or Ademmco products, usually include 2 doors and a motion detector, and are usually installed by piece-work contractors. All of these installs cost the company money up front. Money they know they will make up over the years of monitoring. So, if someone is selling a 99.00 alarm without a contract, the only way they could be doing this (in my opinion) is by using the absolute cheapest equipment (junk) and cheapest labor (untrained / uncaring) they can find.

If you want a quality alarm, you need to either pay 100.00s of dollars for the equipment up-front or sign a multi-year contact. Either option can work with a reputable company. But Free, or might as well be free (ie $99.00) and no contract is more likely a scam than a security system in my opinion.

One great way to get a quality, professionally installed product is to contact your local IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) to make sure the alarm company you choose uses union labor.

Trust the small company! I wouldn't think of suckering any of my new customers into signing a lenghty contract that contains a ton of legal jargon with "lock-in" agreements and "acceleration" clauses like the big companies do. Oh, and by the way, a "real" security system isn't free or costs $99.00. I see good honest people that get trapped all the time and that my friends is a crime in itself!

The reason ADT only works with a few VOIP services is because of concern for the customer. The company has a list of several services they have tested and can work reliably with. Most VOIP services (not all) use a modem that coverts the signal. That's why you can use normal telephones on them as it's an analog signal coming out of the modem.

One problem is that not all services make it possible for the system to be installed with "line seizure". Alarm companies (good ones anyway) generally require this. If an alarm is installed without out it then all someone has to do it take a phone off the hook when they break in and the alarm cannot dial out.

Another problem is that most VOIP services have no battery backup for their modem (though you can solve this by purchasing a UPS yourself). So if the power is out, you have no phone service and thus no way for the alarm to call out in an emergency.

Yet another problem is service down time. Generally speaking, in my area anyway, though neither is down often, internet service goes down more frequently than POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) phone service.

One solution available to you is a cellular communicator. They are not cheap, and they generally add to your monthly fee, but they would allow communication regardless of the phone service you have.

Another solution is to contact your VOIP provider to see if there is an adapter of something similar to allow for a connection.

Yet another solution would be to have an analog phone number with no extra features (Long Distance not needed as your alarm calls toll free numbers) that you alarm (not to mention a fax machine if you have a need for one) could use.

Finally, you could call your local ADT office and ask then which VOIP services in your area they can work with and then look into them to see if any have comparable services and pricing. You might find a service that you can painlessly switch to that solves the problem.

As for your contract let me ask you this. If you purchased cellular phone service from company with a multi-year contract but later decided you wanted a completely different (super cool) phone that you saw at the mall, bought it, and tossed your old phone in the trash, who would you consider to be at fault when you discovered there was no way to make the new phone work with your existing cellular service?

When you purchased the alarm you had POTS telephone service and the alarm worked fine. When you changed your phone service, it created a problem for your alarm. While I understand how people might not think of their alarm when changing telephone services it's still a problem THEY create for their alarm service, not something caused by their alarm company.
