Focus is on (surprise surprise) Sarah Palin and the rift she created within the campaign. By now we all are well informed about how uninformed and intellectually incurious Palin is (re-watch the Katie Couric interviews for a refresher), but apparently there was a lot that was kept within the McCain campaign until now. The latest demonstration of the McCain campaign’s wretchedly poor vetting of Palin is the revelation that she had to have explained to her that Africa is a continent, not a country. Our 5-year old knows that! She apparently thought that South Africa simply referred to a geographical region — not a country — on the African continent. She also did not know which countries comprise NAFTA (um, let me see, North American Free Trade Agreement — duh, the country of North America is the answer!). Besides her suspect geographical and historical knowledge (which in the above video link O’Reilly dismisses as essentially irrelevant because you can also just picked that petty stuff up with a tutor), more has come out on her shopaholicism and temper tantrums she threw when reading negative press about herself. And some GOPers are touting her a standard bearer in 2012?? Please please pick her to run against Barack (we’re on a first-name basis now, btw). I’d LOVE to watch those presidential debates….

1) speaking in complete and occasionally compound, complex sentences that express complete and occasionally compound, complex thoughts;
2) eating any other variety of greens besides iceberg lettuce (such as arugula);
3) imbibing (European-inspired) espresso-based drinks (and using the word “imbibe”);
4) knowing and pronouncing properly the names of foreign countries, their capitals, and their leaders;
5) having any connection with the Northeast, with Ivy League Schools (unless you are a Republican), or “Hollywood.”

Recently McPalin offered further precision in the location of the elitist hot beds in America in an interview with NBC’s Brian Williams, where Palin took the lead with this answer (I won’t even bother with the “[sic]” notations; the whole thing deserves one big “[sic]”:

WILLIAMS: Who is a member of the elite?
PALIN: Oh, I guess just people who think that they’re better than anyone else. And– John McCain and I are so committed to serving every American. Hard-working, middle-class Americans who are so desiring of this economy getting put back on the right track. And winning these wars. And America’s starting to reach her potential. And that is opportunity and hope provided everyone equally. So anyone who thinks that they are– I guess– better than anyone else, that’s– that’s my definition of elitism.

Those rabid supporters at the McPalin rallies are not all men, I know, but the ones I saw foaming at the mouth were mostly men who ranted in a way that made it clear that they are scared shitless at the thought that their president of the their Real America will be a black man who “doesn’t see the world as they do” (to paraphrase Palin). Regardless of field of expertise, Obama appears to have a magical ability of assembling a crack-team of 21st-century wizards who combine intelligent and creative thinking.  What I think is the only example needed to demonstrate the chasm that exists between McCain’s 20th-century imagination (if we can even give it that name) and the new media savvy of the Team Obama: Obama has bought advertising in cyberspace. Well, at least in the video game world of Burnout Paradise on the Xbox 360. Do you think McCain even knows what an Xbox is, let alone think it would be possible and perhaps desirable to reach a certain demographic to advertise there (wherever “there” is, which is exactly the point–it is wherever someone plays the game)? I think this move is brilliant, whether or not Obama garners the gamer vote (which he will). Besides being simply too cool, what it bears witness to is the up-to-date broad and deep understanding Team Obama has about media space and how to use it to its advantage. It also allows Obama to accrue cool-n-hip points (which is simply another way to underscoring McCain’s fossilization). Now I really wish he’d host a rap session in Second Life, although the crush of avatars, including my own Animus Klaar, would likely crash the servers….
