I imbibed deeply of Saussure and Barthes and other French Structuralists (and then Poststructuralists) long ago so you’d think I wouldn’t feel so suprised and overwhelmed by the surfeit of signs in the landscape. And I don’t mean just the obvious linguistic signs.
