“I bought it on eBay…” (not)

Posted in: Politics

What’s weirder than Weird Al Jankovic (singer of the parody song “eBay“)? That Sarah Palin and, last night, John McCain would lie mislead by claiming that as a cost-cutting measure Gov. Palin sold the governor’s jet on eBay for a profit? McCain’s words: “You know what i enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — made a profit.

Well, that’s a lie not exactly the how the transaction went. According to the Anchorage Daily News, after going unsold, the jet was turned over to aircraft broker Turbo North Aviation, which put the nearly $2.7 million jet for sale at $2.45 million. It quickly sold to Alaska businessman Larry Reynolds for a reduced price of $2.1 million ($31,000 of which went to Turbo Aviation). Today the jet ushers wealthy hunters around Alaska and Russia. In other words, as the HuffPo sums it up:

“So why on earth would Palin lie about this, knowing that it would bring scrutiny to this story, and knowing that the scrutiny would reveal that a) the auction wasn’t successful, b) she lost the State of Alaska’s money on the deal, and c) the state’s valuable resource had basically become a luxury for wealthy elites? I have no idea! But whatever! It’s definitely not the worst lie she’s ever told.”

Does this woman (and that man) have no shame? (Don’t answer that.)
