Vice President Palin
Maybe Vice President of the Wasilla Lake Christian School PTA. No sooner had McCain announced his “bold” and mavericky choice for VP did the resume of Sarah Palin hit–or perhaps more appropriate is lightly touched–the media. Except for the wingnuts like Ralph Reed and other conservative evangelical blowhards who are “ecstatic” (probably literally ecstatic) by this choice, the near-unanimous opinion is that this one-time beauty queen (Miss Wasilla, 1984 pictured here) ex-small-town mayor and less-than-two-year governor of a state that has more moose than people has about as much experience and qualification necessary for the VP position–let alone, God forbid, the presidency–as would the moose she is so fond of making stew out of. This is SUCH A CYNICAL CHOICE that it certainly nails shut the coffin on what integrity McCain might have had left. Selecting a woman with NO REAL EXECUTIVE QUALIFICATIONS and who when asked a while ago about her interest in being the VP replied that she didn’t really know what a VP does, means that she was selected for other reasons. Obviously, first of all, because she is a woman. Secondly, because she has blue-collar appeal (not real qualifications for VP, I think). Thirdly and most frighteningly, because she a gun-totin’ oil-drillin’ global-warming-denyin’ social arch-conservative who believes creationism should be taught in schools and that under no circumstances should abortion be legal. In other words, McCain is basically pimping her for votes from the wingnuts (i.e., W’s most avid supporters) and, I guess, disaffected Hillary supporters who would cut off their noses to spite their faces, plain and simple. No one in their right mind and with a straight face can tell you that she would be ready to serve as President if 72-year-OLD McCain keels over. The cynicism of it all makes me puke. If McCain actually wins with this act of desperation to appear cool and relevant (I mean, this act of caving into the Rovian Right), then I simply give up on hope of any inkling of intelligence residing in the American electorate at large. If you don’t know how lameass lame this choice is, check out this lowdown by a guy who’s lived in Alaska for the last 17 years and knows the politics there. For another (growing) list of the reasons why McCain/Palin must be defeated soundly, read this. And then go sign up voters for Obama and donate more dollars to him. I just gave another hundred.
